Dental lasers are often marketed as painless, needle-free and futuristic. Some of that is true and some is exaggerated. Here is a balanced look at what laser dentistry can genuinely offer.
A dental laser is a device that delivers a focused beam of light energy to cut, shape or treat tissue. Different lasers work at different wavelengths, and the wavelength decides what the laser is good at:
Soft-tissue lasers (for example, diode lasers): absorbed mainly by gum tissue and pigment, so they are used on gums.
Hard and soft tissue lasers (for example, Er:YAG): can also work on tooth and bone, and are used in selected cavity and surgical procedures.
Lasers are safe when used correctly. Standard precautions include protective eyewear for the patient and the team, correct settings for the tissue treated, and use only by trained clinicians. Certain conditions, such as some medications that increase light sensitivity, need review beforehand.
If you have a gum concern or a procedure you have been told needs surgery, ask whether a laser approach is suitable. Book a consultation at Dr. Kashi's Ashwathi Dental Clinic, Trivandrum.
General information only. Suitability and availability of laser treatment are decided after examination.
