Cosmetic dentistry used to involve a leap of faith: you described what you wanted and hoped the result matched. Digital Smile Design (DSD) replaces guesswork with planning, using photographs, scans and a preview stage so you can see and approve a proposed smile before any permanent treatment begins.
What Is Digital Smile Design?
DSD is a planning workflow rather than a single treatment. It brings together facial photographs, video, digital scans of your teeth and your own goals to design a smile that suits your face, lips, gum line and bite. The plan is then used to decide which treatments, if any, are needed.
What Does a Smile Design Look At?
- Tooth proportions: width, length and shape relative to each other
- Midline and symmetry: how the smile aligns with the centre of the face
- Smile line: how much tooth and gum show when you smile
- Gum contour: whether uneven gums make teeth look short or crooked
- Lip position and support
- Colour: the shade, in harmony with skin tone and eyes
- Function: how the teeth meet, because an attractive result must also chew well
How the Process Works
- Consultation: you explain what you dislike and what you want. A dental exam and X-rays check that teeth and gums are healthy first.
- Records: photographs, video and a digital scan or impressions are taken.
- Design: the dentist creates a digital plan, often with a dental technician.
- Preview: a trial smile, often called a mock-up, is placed temporarily on your teeth so you can see and feel the proposed change and give feedback.
- Treatment: once you approve, the plan is carried out in stages.
- Finishing and maintenance: final adjustments, a retainer or night guard if advised, and review visits.
What a Preview Can and Cannot Do
A mock-up is a valuable guide, but it is a simulation. Final results depend on the tooth structure, materials, healing and your bite, and small differences are normal. A responsible plan also respects your natural teeth, preserving as much healthy tooth as possible.
